WesFlexTM Spent Nuclear Fuel Transport & Storage System

After Phase I of the Multi-Purpose Canister (MPC) design and development effort was submitted by the Westinghouse-lead team, Westinghouse chose to pursue development of their own certified spent nuclear fuel (SNF) storage and transportation system. Similar to the MPC program, the objective of the development of this system was to provide certified fuel storage and transportation systems for use at utility plant sites. Q-Metrics had the lead responsibilities for the thermal design and both 10 CFR Part 71 and 72 certification of the WesFlex fuel baskets, canisters, transportation, and storage cask. In past system licensing initiatives, natural convection within fuel baskets has not been accounted for. This is primarily due to the complexity of quantifying the convective cooling characteristics. To boost the heat load capacity of the WesFlex system, Q-Metrics chose to take credit of the intricate 3-D convective and radiative heat transfer regimes.

The WesFlex system is in its final stages of NRC licensing activities and fabrication kick-off is approaching….
