Gregory J. Banken, P.E. - President / Senior Thermal AnalystM.S./1980/Mechanical Engineering, University of Washington B.S./1971/ Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering, University of Minnesota Mr. Banken has 17 years of experience on nuclear projects, including both DOE and NRC regulated projects, 8 years of experience in the aerospace industry, and 5 years as a general industrial process consultant. He has extensive experience in system simulation and testing of complex systems. Heat transfer involving convection and radiation is a specialty, as is computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Mr. Banken has excellent technical writing skills. Nuclear Material Handling: Mr. Banken has provided thermal analysis and design support for the transport and storage of nuclear material involving 14 major cask designs. This experience includes the Wesflex™, FuelSolutions™, and NUHOMS™ systems for the storage, transfer, and transportation of commercial nuclear fuel, the Multi-Canister Overpack (MCO) Transportation Cask for DOE SNF Project at Hanford, WA, the HalfPack and TRUPACT-II Transportation Casks for the WIPP facility, the re-certification of the BUSS cask, and the Multi-Purpose Canister (MPC) project for DOE. Additional work experience includes the RTG (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator) transportation package, and the 125B, 10/140MB, 72B (RH-TRU), and MH-1 casks. Mr. Banken nuclear experience includes 10 years experience at the Hanford Site. His Hanford work experience includes the Sludge Transportation System (STS), Fuel Transfer System (FTS), Spent Nuclear Fuel Project, Cold Vacuum Drying Facility (CVDF), Canister Storage Building (CSB), the PAS-1 cask for the on-site transport of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies recovered during the cleanup of the Hanford F and H reactor basins, Multi-Canister Overpack (MCO) Transportation Cask SARP, and the re-certification of the BUSS cask. Electronic Packaging: An area of specialty for Mr. Banken is the thermal analysis and design of electronic packaging. This experience ranges from the chip level to the enclosure and includes forced and natural air cooling of computers, electronic equipment, etc., the design of heat sinks and cold plates, research and analysis of advanced packaging concepts for multi-chip modules using new substrate materials, micro-channel cooling, two phase cooling, etc., and the design of enclosures at the component, package, and system levels. Recent projects include thermal design support for an FAA-certified Explosives Detection System for use in airports and wireless LAN equipment. He has also provided thermal analysis, design, and testing support for an advanced threat indicator panel for the F/A-18 aircraft. The heat dissipation had to be accomplished by passive means only to the cockpit interior. The analysis was verified through testing at simulated altitude conditions (i.e. reduced pressures). Additional projects included thermal design of a sonar imaging device for mapping the sea floor, design changes for the Mark 50 torpedo for the Navy, an advanced deep sea vehicle, and an innovative fluid cooling system for an advanced aircraft avionics module using micropumps. Commercial and Industrial Processes: Mr. Banken has extensive experience with simulation/design of processes found in commercial and industrial buildings. When the Kingdome roof in Seattle, WA suffered a sudden failure, Mr. Banken was part of a national team of experts consulted to aid in the investigation of the failure mode and to provide design direction for the repair project. He has also provided thermal consultation and analysis for a paper mill in China, a water treatment facility in Michigan that was incurring thermally induced structural damage, a steam distribution system at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard which had experienced persistent thermal expansion problems, and an aluminum smelting plant that was seeking to improve its thermal efficiency and recover resources from its ‘salt cake’ byproduct.
