The Beneficial Uses Shipping System (BUSS)

The BUSS cask was originally certified for onsite transportation of "Special Form" Waste Encapsulation Storage Facility (WESF) capsules of melt-cast cesium chloride or pressed-filled strontium fluoride. Both payloads are highly radioactive and produce a significant amount of decay heat. Given its success in handling such sensitive payloads and for the purpose of providing a cost effective offsite transport packaging, a Certificate of Compliance (COC) licensing the BUSS cask for offsite shipment of "Normal Form" capsules was sought by Westinghouse Hanford. Q-Metrics performed the thermal related analyses required for certification. The work scope consisted of performing analytical evaluations to ensure compliance with the requirements for certification for Type B packagings under 10CFR71, and preparation of the appropriate SARP sections.
